- Auto Safety
- Fifteen Weeks (9 weeks of classroom and 6 weeks of Laboratory
Instruction); .5 credit for classroom phase
- Prerequisite:
- 15 1/2 years of age. Students must have 8 credits from two previous
semesters. Sophomore standing, if age requirement is met
- Description:
- Driver Education is a two-phase course. The first phase is the
Auto Safety phase which lasts for nine weeks. The second phase
is the Behind-The-Wheel phase which is six weeks, or five weeks
if taken in the summer.
State rulings limit the issuance of a drivers license until a
student is 18 years of age unless he or she has successfully completed
the high school course of Driver Education. A license can be issued
at age 16 if students meet the completion of high school courses.
A total of one-half credit can be allowed toward graduation.
The Illinois director of safety education recommends that enrollment
in the classroom phase of Driver Education should be restricted
to students who are 15 1/2 by the time they enroll in the classroom
phase. Scheduling problems may necessitate a few exceptions however,
in no case should students under the age of 15 years be admitted
to the program of instruction.
Danville is an equal opportunity school and all students have
the right to take all courses. A handicapped brake and accelerator
is available for our drivers education behind the wheel. This
is installed when a person is paralyzed or semi-paralyzed person
needs the device the student receives the same drivers education
training as all the other students.
Danville High School also opens its doors and provides classroom
and behind the wheel for all local private school students, home
schooled students and senior citizens who wish to participate
in the course work.
The classroom phase of driver education implements professional
people from society who come to class and speak and who will help
our students to deal better with their responsibilities as a 16
year-old driver, i.e., Ron Soderstrum, a Danville policeman, Peggy
Johnson, County coroner, Curt Ellis, an insurance agent with State
Farm, Don Schaefer, with a seat belt convincor for our students
to experience a 10 mile-an-hour crash, Jim Layton, an engineer
with Norfolk and Western Railroad and a motorcycle safety course
provided by A.B.A.T.E.
The auto safety phase is scheduled by the Guidance Department.
A driver education instructor schedules all driver education,
First Baptist, GED, and home school students for behind the wheel
instruction.
- Evaluation:
- Students are evaluated on an A, B, C, D, or F basis as in other
courses. State law requires students to have 30 hours of Auto
Safety. Students are dropped from auto safety if they do not fulfill
this requirement.
